How to use the duck decoys and hunt ducks?

motion duck decoys

It has been years since people are using duck decoys for luring the waterfowl and hunting ducks with this trick. People in the past used to create sculptures out of hand when hunting ducks. The material primary available to them was grass and cattails. They used to assemble the floating decoys around to begin the hunting game. They used to lure the waterfowl in the nested area so that they could snare the birds by using various means such as arrows, netting and using bows. TheNativeAmericans were the ones who were the master in the knowledge of following the patterns or waterfowl. They used to maintain their village close to the local water lakes and ponds so that hunting ducks could become easier.

Using the Duck Decoys

In today’s time too, duck decoys are widely used by the hunters, but little do the beginners know about the right way of using them. It is great if you have the motion duck decoys but you are never going to make the most out of them until you don’t use them in the right way.

A common mistake that many hunters commit is using the same spread decoy throughout the season. They might do this for the sake of saving money, but what happens is that they limit themselves to the decoying opportunities. The best approach is to look for the tested decoy setups which have already been proven for different locations and situations. This will make the task of killing the ducks easier than ever.

There is no doubt that the materials used for the manufacturing of the decoys have changed, but the purpose is still the same. The modern decoys created are as effective as the ones used in the past because the decoys alone don’t do you any good unless you use the right strategies in combination with it.

In case you are hunting in a large and open water area, it is recommended to use more decoys and create waterfowl. You can create fowl of 6 to 8 blocks. In case the area is small, then it is recommended to create only a single block of dozen decoys. When you are hunting at the beginning of the season, then spread the decoys over a large area, but as the season progresses, reduce the size and the spread.

The rule is not to buy as many as decoys as you can because it will get expensive anddifficult for you to carry them around. When you are hunting in a wetland area, you must set the decoys in the upwind direction from the location of your blind. In this way, the birds will simply fly over your blind and they will have something else to focus on instead of the hunter. If you do not use this method in case of hunting ducks, they will settle at the outer edges of the spread and eventually it will limit the opportunities for shooting.

DuckHunting Secrets

Apart from using the motion duck decoys, there are some other tips and rules to follow too. Here are two of the most important considerations:

  • Scouting

Scouting is one of the most time-consumingactivities, but it is necessary if you want to successfully begin the hunting. Apart from just learning about the food and shelterrequirements of the duck, you are also required to learn about the environment in which they live. Food, shelter and the place for resting are 3 important things which you are required to keep in mind. This will help you in finding more and more opportunities to find ducks and shoot them.

  • Concealment

Once you have successfully chosen the spot where the duck is going to land, the next thing to worry about is your concealment. Choose natural surroundings for creating blind so that you blend into the landscape natural. It will be impossible to hide completely. It is recommended to use the shadows that are available in the surrounding to camouflage. In this way, you will protect yourself from getting noticed.

If you hold onto these two important tips, then you are going to go home with many ducks. It will be hard to get perfect in the beginning, so don’t worry if you have to go through trial and error.
